Playing Lotto America is easy! You only need to choose five numbers ranging from 1 to 52 along with one Lotto America Star Ball number from 1 to 10, or opt for the «quick pick» feature for randomly generated numbers.

Lotto America made its debut on February 13, 1988, featuring a $1 per play, pick-7-of-40 format. Matching four numbers secured a fixed prize of $5, while matching at least five awarded a parimutuel prize. The jackpot, won by matching all seven numbers, had odds of approximately 1 in 18 million, making it the U.S. lottery game with the longest odds at the time.

Midway through its four-year stint, Lotto America transitioned into a more conventional pick-6-of-54 game, offering two games for $1. The jackpot odds improved to 1 in 13 million per dollar. In various regions, Lotto America was known by different, more localized names. For instance, in Minnesota, it was referred to as Lotto Minnesota.

In 1992, the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) discontinued Lotto America, replacing it with Powerball. However, after a 25-year hiatus, all 14 states that previously participated agreed to reintroduce Lotto America. The game reemerged in October 2017.

The new version featured some differences from the original: Players selected five numbers from a pool of 52 and one Star Ball from a pool of 10. Additionally, the All Star Bonus was introduced, offering players the chance to boost any non-jackpot prizes won by up to five times.

Jackpots now usually commence at $2 million, and if not won in a draw, they roll over to the next one, with at least $50,000 added to the prize pool.

Lotto America draws are conducted by the Multi-State Lottery Association in locations designated by the MUSL Lotto America Product Group. During the draw, the MUSL will randomly pick five numbers between 1 and 52, and one number between 1 and 10. After verification, these chosen numbers are officially published as the winning numbers.

The multiplier number is randomly selected before each draw. 

Winning is possible in nine different ways, beginning with a $2 prize for matching solely the Star Ball. Match the initial five numbers alongside the Star Ball to claim the jackpot. Initial jackpots usually stand at $2 million* and continue to increase until there’s a winner. 

Jackpot winners can opt to receive their winnings as a series of annuities, paid out in 30 graduated installments over 29 years, or as a lump-sum payment.

The starting jackpot amount and rate at which the jackpot increases will be based upon sales and interest rates, with no fixed minimums.
