Unclaimed lottery prizes make for an unsettling Halloween story. Can you imagine holding a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket worth millions of dollars and never collecting the money?
These real-life “ghost jackpots” left behind enormous prizes and a question that still lingers: what happened to the winning tickets?

The $77 Million Powerball Ticket That Expired in Georgia
In 2011, someone bought a Powerball ticket worth $77 million at the Pilot Travel Center in Tallapoosa, Georgia. The ticket matched the winning numbers for the June 29 drawing.
Its owner had 180 days to claim the prize. Weeks turned into months, but no one presented the winning ticket before time ran out.
On December 26, the deadline passed. A ticket that could have changed someone’s life was no longer eligible for the jackpot.
Was it sitting in a glove compartment? Tucked into a wallet? Nobody could say where it had gone.
A $68 Million Mega Millions Mystery on Christmas Eve
Another story began with the December 24, 2002, Mega Millions drawing. A winning ticket purchased in New York City hit a $68 million jackpot.
It could have been an unforgettable Christmas gift. Instead, the prize went unclaimed.
Mega Millions still lists it in the game’s official jackpot history. The amount and drawing date are on record, but they don’t tell us what happened to the ticket itself.
What Happens to Unclaimed Lottery Prizes?
The money doesn’t simply disappear. In games such as Powerball and Mega Millions, unclaimed jackpot funds are returned to participating lotteries based on their contributions. Each jurisdiction then distributes its share according to its own rules.
For the ticket holder, though, the deadline matters. Powerball claim periods typically range from 90 days to one year, depending on where the ticket was purchased.
As for these two tickets, being lost during a move or forgotten in a drawer are possibilities, not confirmed explanations.
